Anesthesia Interest Group

The mission of the Anesthesiology Interest Group at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is to help students gain a better understanding of all the career possibilities within the exciting field of Anesthesiology. The Anesthesiology Interest Group works with the University of Mississippi's Department of Anesthesiology to help carry out this mission through meetings, activities, and projects that are designed to offer students more exposure to the field of Anesthesiology.

The Anesthesiology Interest Group's membership is at an all time high! The 2009-2010 year started with over fifty student members, and we expect this number to increase as the year progresses. The AIG has many exiting activities planned including several informative lunch meetings, vascular and airway workshops, and several free blood pressure screenings within the community.
Without the continuous support from the Department of Anesthesiology, the ambitious activities of the AIG would not be possible. The Chief Resident Advisors work closely with the officers to help plan and organize the activities calendar at the beginning of each school year. Through their involvement, the AIG is able to better achieve their goals. Many residents have generously offered their time to assist in workshops, speak at luncheons, and are always available to answer questions and offer guidance.
The Department of Anesthesiology fosters a friendly, open environment. Medical students have many opportunities to become more involved and learn more about Anesthesiology as a career. medical students are encouraged to take call with residents, shadown an anesthesiologist, or become involved in research. the Anesthesiology Interest Group works with the Department of Anesthesiology to not only make the student aware of these opportunities but encourage their involvement as well.

American Society of Anesthesiologists - Medical Student Component

The University of Mississippi Department of Anesthesiology and the Anesthesiology Interest Group strongly encourages membership to the American Society of Anesthesiologists Medical Student Component. Each year the Chairman of the Department, Dr. Claude Brunson, demonstrates his support of the ASA MSC by nominating and supporting a Student Delegate for the Medical Student Component House of Delegates Meeting at the ASA Annual Meeting.
The Anesthesiology Interest Group would like to announce that Alan Torrey has been named the 2009-2010 Student Delegate! The AIG would also like to congratulate the 2008-2009 Student Delegate, Jill Cooley, who was elected to the position of Secretary of the Medical Student Component at the 2009 ASA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.
