Pain Clinic - VIP Program

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.  Pain is one of the most common reasons that prompt patients to seek medical care. The public and personal cost is enormous.  In the Department of Anesthesiology, division of pain medicine, we are engaged in education, clinical care, and research with the goal of improving the lives of pain patients.

The Pain Management Fellowship at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center is a one year program designed to provide subspecialty training in Pain Medicine for residents or practitioners who have completed an approved residency training program. The fellowship year is considered a PGY-5 position. A multidisciplinary program utilizing multimodal treatment protocols including both interventional and non-interventional techniques is geared towards providing our fellows with the scientific foundations of pain medicine that makes them eligible for Board Certification in Pain Management. Our fellows gain broad experience in rational drug selection, peripheral nerve blocks, central neural blockades, use of implantable devices, acupuncture and public health principles in providing care for a broadspectrum of patients with acute, chronic and cancer pain.

The section of Pain Management is under the Department of Anesthesiology and operates an acute pain and consultation service for in-house patients, pain clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall, pain clinic at the University Medical Pavilion and an acupuncture clinic.  The Acute Pain and Consultation Service actively manage patients with postoperative pain and hospitalized patients with pain issues requiring specialized evaluation and interventions. The acupuncture clinic provides therapy for pain and other diseases as part of the integrated management approach, and is staffed by a dedicated physician. The Chronic Pain Clinic manages patients with chronic cancer and non-cancer pain using a multidisciplinary approach involving both interventional and non interventional modalities with the goal of improving quality of living and easing of pain. As a specialty clinic, patients are seen on a referral basis.

Formal lectures are supervised by the faculty and include Pain Medicine subspecialty lectures which follows the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) core curriculum. The fellows are directly involved. The fellows also actively participate in residents’ teaching and administration. Our fellows are encouraged to participate in basic and clinical research and to present such papers at the local and national levels. Research opportunities are also available in the study of the epidemiology of pain and pain therapy, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, etc.

Applicants must have completed an ACGME approved 4 year residency program. Applicants should have or be eligible for a Mississippi medical license and DEA certificate. International Medical Graduates should have a valid visa. Completed applications are reviewed and potential candidates are invited for a personal interview.
